What Is Pongee Fabric?

Pongee is a woven fabric traditionally associated with Chinese wild silk. The name derives from the Chinese term “Póngē,” meaning woven silk. Modern commercial pongee, however, is frequently produced from polyester or blends of silk and synthetic fibers.

Pongee normally uses a plain-weave structure. It has a fine, uniform warp and an irregular or subtly textured filling, producing an even surface with a characteristically crisp but manageable hand. Depending on yarn, density and finishing, pongee may be lightweight or medium-weight.

Modern polyester pongee is valued as a practical lining and shell material because it is finely woven, durable, long-lasting, lightweight and relatively resistant to wrinkling. It can be supplied plain dyed, printed, embroidered, coated or laminated to achieve different aesthetic and functional results.
