2024-2026 Fabric Regulations & Compliance Update
Garment programs entering California should account for AB 1817. Most new textile articles containing intentionally added PFAS have been prohibited in California since January 1, 2025, with a 100 ppm total organic fluorine threshold that tightens to 50 ppm on January 1, 2027. The temporary exception through 2027 applies only to a narrowly defined category of outdoor apparel for severe wet conditions—not ordinary sportswear, athleisure, casual garments or mainstream rainwear. Buyers developing water-repellent fabrics should request a signed compliance declaration, traceable chemical documentation and appropriate third-party testing rather than relying only on “C0” or “fluorine-free” marketing language.

For garments sold in the European Union, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation entered into force in 2024 and establishes a framework for product-level ecodesign requirements and Digital Product Passports. Textile-specific obligations depend on subsequent delegated rules, but sourcing teams should already improve traceability for fiber composition, recycled content, chemical inputs, production sites, test reports and shipment records. Building this data structure during fabric development reduces the risk of missing information when product-specific requirements become applicable.

Compliance must be confirmed for the finished article and target market. A fabric’s suitability cannot be established from its product name or fiber composition alone.
Why Source Garment Fabrics from Wujiang, Suzhou?
Wujiang’s textile cluster offers access to a deep and highly specialized supply base. This matters when a garment collection requires multiple constructions rather than one standardized fabric—for example, a supportive nylon/spandex body fabric, lightweight pocketing, brushed jacket material, recycled polyester top fabric and woven fashion polyester within the same program.
Our role is to connect those requirements to suitable production capabilities while maintaining a coordinated development process. This can reduce fragmented communication, improve material matching and give buyers a clearer route from initial specification to approved bulk production.
Why Choose FabricsTrades?
Factory-Backed Expertise
We own a 4-way stretch fabric factory and understand how yarn selection, construction, dyeing and finishing affect garment performance. Our team can support your project from fabric specification and sampling through bulk production.Strategic Sourcing in Suzhou
Located in Wujiang District, Suzhou—one of the world’s most concentrated textile hubs—we have direct access to specialized weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing, coating and finishing facilities. If a fabric exists, we can find it. If it does not, we can help you create it.Custom Fabric Development
We develop fabrics around your actual application, including fiber composition, weight, width, stretch, recovery, hand feel, color and functional finishing. Reference samples and buyer-specific requirements can also be matched.Extensive Material Options
Source stretch fabrics, recycled polyester, recycled nylon, garment fabrics, linings, outerwear materials and performance textiles through one coordinated partner. This makes it easier to build collections that require multiple fabric constructions.Quality You Can Verify
Quality control can cover fabric weight, width, color, stretch and recovery, dimensional stability, pilling, abrasion resistance and colorfastness. Testing requirements can be agreed upon before production and linked to the approved fabric specification.Compliance-Ready Sourcing
We help buyers collect relevant test reports, chemical declarations and traceability documents for their target markets. PFAS, restricted-substance and recycled-content requirements can be considered during material selection and product development.Certified Recycled Options
As a GRS-certified supplier, we support eligible recycled polyester and recycled nylon programs. Certification scope and shipment-level documentation can be confirmed according to the selected product and order requirements.Faster, Clearer Communication
Working with a partner located inside the textile supply cluster reduces fragmented communication between mills, dye houses, finishers and testing providers. You receive a clearer development process, faster problem-solving and more consistent production follow-up.Flexible Support for Global Buyers
Whether you are developing a new fabric, matching an existing quality or consolidating several materials into one sourcing program, our team provides practical support for sampling, production, testing and international delivery.More Than a Fabric Supplier
FabricsTrades combines factory-level textile knowledge with the sourcing reach of Wujiang’s extensive manufacturing network. Our goal is not simply to sell fabric, but to help you select, develop and deliver the right material for your product.

Modern Garment Applications and Use Cases
High-Support Sports Bras and Training Vests
High-support bras require controlled stretch, strong recovery and stable power in both the body panel and underband. Nylon/spandex or polyester/spandex constructions can be mapped to separate garment zones, with higher stability around the bust and underband and more flexible structures through the back and shoulder areas. Suitable developments include fixed-pad running bras, zip-front training bras, cross-back yoga bras, tennis vests and deep V-back gym tops. Designers should evaluate stretch modulus, recovery, seam strength, opacity under extension, perspiration colorfastness and dimensional stability.Yoga, Pilates and Studio Apparel
“Nude feel” and “cloud feeling” fabrics are suited to leggings, bodysuits, jumpsuits, crop tops and low-bulk studio garments where softness, smooth extension and freedom of movement are central requirements. Modern applications include laser-cut panels, bonded hems, seamless-look waistbands, gusseted leggings and garments designed for deep flexion. Fabric selection should account for squat-proof opacity, surface pilling, snag resistance and recovery after prolonged extension.Running and Cycling Garments
Quick-dry polyester/spandex and nylon/spandex fabrics can be used for close-fitting running tops, cycling layers, pocket shorts and lightweight jackets. Zoned mesh, mapped ventilation panels and brushed inner surfaces can be combined according to climate and activity intensity. For cycling applications, procurement teams should consider saddle-zone abrasion, pocket load stability, aerodynamic fit and stretch recovery. Running garments benefit from low wet cling, moisture transport, freedom at the shoulder and resistance to chafing at seam intersections.Tennis, Padel and Court Sports
Stretch fabrics are suitable for tennis skirts, integrated shorts, fitted vests and coordinated court sets. Double-layer constructions can combine a decorative outer skirt with high-elasticity inner shorts and secure pockets. Critical evaluation points include hem recovery, waistband stability, opacity, ball-pocket retention and rapid drying between high-intensity movement intervals.Performance Jackets and Transitional Outerwear
Brushed stretch constructions can be used for stand-collar running jackets, training layers and lightweight cycling shells. Depending on the intended market, development may include wind resistance, fluorine-free water repellency, soft inner brushing or panel-specific breathability. Any water-repellency claim should be supported by a defined test method and agreed performance level. A fabric described as water-repellent should not automatically be represented as waterproof.Wide-Leg Pants, Casual Shirts and Long Dresses
The listed 100% polyester CEY ice strap fabric supports fashion applications such as wide-leg pants, casual shirts and long dresses. Its use in these silhouettes can provide fluid movement, easy care and a cool visual character while retaining a stable woven structure. Development possibilities include resort wear, modest fashion, travel capsules, matching sets, relaxed office garments and lightweight occasion pieces.Compression and Body-Contouring Garments
High-recovery stretch fabrics can be engineered for compression shorts, supportive bodysuits, sculpting tops and fitted training sets. Compression must be measured rather than judged solely by hand feel. Excessive modulus may restrict movement, while insufficient recovery can cause bagging at the knees, elbows, waist or seat.Adaptive and Inclusive Apparel
Stretch constructions can support adaptive garments with enlarged openings, low-force dressing zones, discreet fastening systems and reduced seam pressure. These fabrics are useful for maternity wear, post-operative garments and apparel designed for people with limited mobility, provided the final product is evaluated for comfort and intended medical or non-medical use.Travel, Uniform and Hybrid Workwear
Wrinkle-resistant stretch polyester fabrics can be developed for travel trousers, hospitality uniforms, commuter jackets and hybrid office garments. Useful requirements include repeated-wash stability, abrasion resistance, easy care and consistent shade matching across replacement orders.Garment Fabric Sourcing and Custom Development
Located in the heart of Wujiang District, Suzhou, FabricsTrades operates within one of the world’s most concentrated textile manufacturing hubs. We are not limited to the constructions available from a single mill. In addition to owning a 4-way stretch fabric factory, we work as a strategic sourcing partner with direct access to thousands of specialized weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing, coating, laminating and finishing suppliers. If a garment fabric already exists, our local network helps us locate the appropriate construction and production route. If it does not, we can help develop it by coordinating fiber selection, yarn specification, structure, weight, width, stretch, hand feel, color, surface treatment and functional finishing. This combination of factory control and regional sourcing capacity supports:- Custom colors, lab dips and buyer-specific color standards

What Are Stretch Garment Fabrics?
Stretch garment fabrics are engineered to extend under tension and recover toward their original dimensions after the force is removed. Stretch may be created through elastic fibers such as spandex or elastane, mechanically textured yarns, knitted loop structures or specialized elastic polyester systems. The appropriate construction depends on the garment’s movement profile, fit, support level and care requirements. A compression sports bra requires a different modulus and recovery profile from a wide-leg woven trouser, brushed running jacket or lightweight casual shirt. Common garment-fabric fiber systems include:- Nylon/spandex: Smooth, strong and highly elastic, making it suitable for fitted activewear, yoga garments, sports bras, cycling apparel and body-contouring pieces.
- Polyester/spandex: Durable and adaptable, with strong potential for quick-dry performance, printed activewear, training tops and stretch outerwear.
- 100% polyester constructions: Suitable for lightweight fashion garments, wide-leg pants, shirts, dresses, linings and styles where dimensional stability and easy care are priorities.
- Recycled polyester or recycled nylon: Used when a program requires certified recycled inputs, subject to the certification scope and transaction documentation agreed for the order.
- Cotton/stretch blends: Appropriate for casual garments requiring a more natural hand combined with moderate flexibility.
- Ribbed and interlock knits: Frequently selected for bodywear, supportive tops, close-fitting garments, cuffs and structured knit silhouettes.
Properties of Garment Stretch Fabrics
The exact performance depends on fiber content, yarn, construction, weight and finishing. Relevant properties may include:- Multidirectional stretch for improved mobility
